Another wet storm lining up for next weekend

OpenSnow forecaster Evan Thayer expects typical fall weather this week, then another moisture-laden southwesterly flow that could bring abundant precipitation from this weekend into early next week. Whether it piles up as snow at resort elevations depends on enough cold air arriving with it. For the season, OpenSnow favors above-normal snow for the Wasatch as a strong El Niño builds, with the best odds January–March.

Oil Dips on Tehran Talks, but Gulf Supply Stays Tight

Brent slipped about 1% to $114.81 a barrel early Tuesday after Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan met Iranian officials in Tehran and agreed to keep talking about regional security, but renewed Houthi missile and drone attacks on the kingdom kept a floor under prices near six-month highs. Gulf crude exports have fallen four weeks running and Strait of Hormuz flows are near 60% of normal, keeping fuel and petrochemical costs elevated.

Three Paths to Turning AI Into Shareholder Returns

A study of more than 600 US public companies found about three-quarters have moved AI beyond pilots, yet none has earned a shareholder-return premium over industry peers because adoption has plateaued. The authors say the winners pick a path — doing existing work more efficiently, improving current products or creating new offerings — and build the capability it needs: redesigned workflows, broad AI fluency or specialist talent.

Claude for Finance & Reporting

Practical ways to put Anthropic's Claude to work on close, analysis and reporting, each with a prompt to try.
Skills

Package your close checklist as a reusable Skill

Agent Skills bundle instructions, templates and scripts that Claude loads only when a task calls for them, and Anthropic is handing the open standard to the Agentic AI Foundation after 70+ platforms adopted it. Write your accrual and reconciliation steps once and every analyst gets the same playbook.

Try“Turn this month-end close checklist and our accrual template into a Skill: list the steps, the files each one needs, and the checks to run before sign-off.”

Use Haiku 5.5 for high-volume coding of transactions

Claude Haiku 5.5 is built for fast, inexpensive, high-volume work, which suits tagging thousands of GL lines or expense descriptions. Save the larger models for the judgment calls the tagging surfaces.

Try“Classify each line in this 5,000-row expense export into our 14 cost categories, flag anything under ‘Other’ or over $10,000, and return a CSV.”
Anthropic · Oct 7, 2026
Projects

Keep a standing “Close” project so every chat starts with context

Put your chart of accounts, materiality thresholds and last quarter's commentary in one project's knowledge so Claude uses your definitions every time. Variance explanations then come back in your house style instead of generic wording.

Try“Using our chart of accounts and last quarter's commentary in this project, draft October variance explanations for every line that moved more than 5% and $25,000.”

In Excel

Have Claude trace a broken number back through the workbook

Claude in Excel can follow a figure through linked tabs and formulas and explain each step with cell references. It is a fast first pass when a forecast total stops tying to the trial balance.

Try“Trace how Summary!F18 is calculated across tabs, list every input cell, and tell me why it no longer matches the TB total of $4.82M.”

A Rich Life of Gratitude

“It is only with gratitude that life becomes rich.”

Writing from prison in 1943, Dietrich Bonhoeffer observed that gratitude is what makes a life rich, and Paul, chained for the gospel, opens his letter to Timothy with thanks (2 Timothy 1:1–3, 6–10). Neither man was spared hardship, yet both leaned on a God whose grace gives far more than we could ever repay, which invites us to notice and thank those whose care has shaped us.

Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.2 Timothy 1:9 (KJV)

Treasure Up the Faithful Sayings

“Treasure up these faithful sayings.”

Spurgeon notes that Paul marks four statements in his letters as “faithful sayings” and reads them as a progression: salvation rests on God’s free grace, godliness carries promise for this life and the next, those who suffer with Christ will reign with Him, and believers are to show their faith in steady good works. He urges us to keep them close as a guide, a comfort and a daily instruction.

It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him.2 Timothy 2:11 (KJV)
